My journey around social media.
Do you ever feel like crying or giving up when marketing on social media starts to feel overwhelming?
I understand you so much. You are never alone.
I also understand that for many of us, myself included, social media is a non-negotiable, so let's make it manageable and less overwhelming!
I just got back on social media because it's where my coaching clients are hanging out, so even though I teach strategy on getting booked outside social media...I find myself having to figure out strategies to reach a bigger audience, boost my engagement and appease the algorithm too.
When I first started my coaching business, I decided to split my Instagram and create a second account, move my photo business to a brand new username and to continue on my main account as a coach/educator.
I will be honest, last year I found ways to book dream clients outside social media altogether, so my engagement was pretty low. Less than 1% of my audience were engaging with any of my content. I was too lazy to create Reels and honestly just used my IG as a portfolio page, and so people knew I was a real person if they went to check me on social.
So when I came back fresh and eager about my new business, I showed up with a TON of excitement and new energy. I used all the trending sounds, engaged with every single person, saved bunches of Reels and went to town daily, for hours on end. My excitement quickly faded with each semi-failed attempt. Too much value and story poured out of me. I put too much of myself into each piece of content. These diary pieces would take me all day to create and I got crickets. So I felt super discouraged. Again.
I was quickly reminded of why I navigated away from these platforms in the first place and toward blogging and emailing, Pinteresting and YouTube.
But this time, I can't just bow out. I HAVE to figure out, because my coaching business depends on it. My dream clients are battling the algorithm and are on the very platforms, they want to step back from. So I slowly uncovered better ways to continue building my new audience on Instagram while simultaneously creating more time freedom to write on this blog, to restart YouTube, and about to start a podcast. And most importantly more time for course creation which is the real reason I am starting this journey. I want to educate, but I need to make a good living doing it. So I can show what is possible for my clients. It's a cycle!
After I made three months of coaching content and figured out what works and what does nothing, I am ready to share it with you. Mostly, my intention is that you follow the strategy that works on social, to continue to chip away at it, and freeing up time and space in your life - so that you can dedicate the new found time to your own blog, maybe start a YouTube channel or a podcast of your own, and definitely get that Pinterest going.
But first, feel free to take what I learned and use these strategies to relax your grip on social media, do less, for more impact and semi-automate your social media to free up your time to begin working on other avenues of revenue.
I understand that for many of us, just like myself, social media is a non-negotiable, so let's make it take up less space in your head for a bit, shall we?
Step 1: SEO proof your social media bio.
Make sure your social media bio is clear and uses words that are searchable. Your name and your type of business should go on the first line "the name line" because they are searchable. So instead of "Sarah Thornton", use "Sarah Thornton | Torrington Wedding Florals".
The rest of your bio should be very clear and speak to only ONE epic transformation. I made the mistake of trying to help with too many things at once and overwhelmed myself and my audience. You can always change your bio as often as you'd like, so I suggest focusing on pushing one thing at a time that is the most important in this phase of your business as of this current moment. We are all multi-passionate, but the idea is to hyper focus on one thing for a bit so you can relax a bit. I know how this sounds, but just stay with me.
In my coaching bio, I am very clear about whom I help "I help women entrepreneurs (femmepreneurs)(now it's the ONE transformation I give/service I provide) book dream clients for high-cash months (now it's the real win) without relying on social media."
My other business, is more transactional. I serve more Ashleys, than Sophias in my photography service business (to learn about the two types of clients and how to market to them, read this blog) so I get to be even more to the point: "Documentary and cinematic wedding and elopement photographer, optional film add on packages".
In both cases, there is not a shred of doubt as to what I do. Unlike "elevate your life, make more money and be healthy". This type of bio leaves a lot of questions. So what I suggest is picking one direction, for example - "double your income with my manifestation technique". Sure, this doesn't directly cover elevating or health, but it will boost engagement b/c you are more clear about what you do and it's less overwhelming to your audience.
It's sometimes hard to see these things for yourself, so it's necessary to look at your own stuff through the lens of a friend or a stranger even. Ask someone if they know what you do by reading your profile bio.
Step 2: Craft your "I help" statement.
After I crafted mine, things really fell into place and so did my content. We will discuss ways to make and automate sixty pieces of content next.
How would you like to have two whole months of content pre-planned, so you can focus on other platforms and ways to be seen? I am going to set you up for success.
You do not have to lose your social media visibility, but you get to book dream clients outside social too, for triple the income. Which is ultimately our goal here.
Your "I help" statement gets to be simple. Pick one clear direction for this phase of your life. I recommend picking one phase for three months, before branching into a second phase. It will help you focus and zero in, and will alleviate overwhelm caused by too many ideas bouncing around in your head. Sometimes it's harmful to try and do them all at once.
Write down "I help" BLANK (insert one audience type) achieve BLANK (insert one result) for BLANK (the aftereffect of achieving the result/ the BIG DREAM), without BLANK (this is the real deal, what their non negotiables are or what they ultimately want to ditch, either works here).
Mine: "I help femmepreneurs book dream clients for high-cash months, without relying on social media."
Brainstorm yours and start to refine as you go.
Step 3: Write down three pillars that go under your "I help" statement.
These are the three major components of you as seen in your business. The three over-arching ideas that define you.
Mine are "SEO", "Outsourcing", and "My Transformation Story".
Underneath each of these, write down three main topics. My example for SEO: Platforms Outside Social Media, Attracting Dream Clients, Email Marketing. These are the three things I coach on in this phase of my business.
Underneath each of these three topics, for every pillar, write down six sub-topics which when put together, make up over sixty pieces of content for the next two months of your magnetic messaging.
Step 4: Plan Your Weekly Content.
Write down which sub-topic will go under each day of the week, if you plan on educating, entertaining or inspiring with this piece of content, and if you plan on creating a Reel or a carousel for each one. Mix them all up with every pillar involved in the mix and different styles of content all throughout depending on your unique style and voice. I tend to educate and inspire mostly because it's what comes more naturally to me. Make sure each piece has a goal whether it's just pure connection, a call to purchase or download a resource, or a request to save and follow.
After you finish planning for the whole week, the next day put together and pre-schedule your entire week of content. TIP: Take short 10 second B-Roll style videos daily as you go about your life to use in Reels. I carry my phone stand around with me. It gets to be the norm.
To be transparent: I am the biggest supporter of being in the moment and there are phases of my life where that feels better than scheduling and planning. But when I find myself overwhelmed or when I need to make space for new strategies in my life, I simplify how I deal with social media so it gets to be like breathing air and not like climbing a steep mountain. Do you feel me?
It took me five hours on a Sunday afternoon to put together my entire week of Reels and carousels. I even put together a couple aesthetic Stories graphics in Canva. All I have to do every day this week is open the app, pick a draft, and post it. Engage with comments and messages and post on stories as I go about my day.
I feel like I can breathe. And more importantly, I feel like I got HOURS back into my life so I can focus on making even deeper genuine connections with people, like this blog post. I will send this blog to all the most important people in my life. I will also launch a podcast and plan a YouTube video tonight.
Instead of stressing whether I posted on social today or not...I got that done first thing today. It was ready to go when I woke up. What a relief!
Do not give up on your business.
It's important not to let social media win. It's not real. It doesn't get to be the villain. You can choose to be like me, and view it as a necessity, continue to show up and create, at the same time you carve out more time that is spent on future proofing your business. Your eggs cannot all be sitting in one basket. Choose other spaces like Google, Pinterest, YouTube, Podcast, Email List to dedicate attention and work on.
It will ultimately liberate you knowing that your business is safe, no matter what.
